Marine Biology – 12-Week Program (Grades 3–8)

Does your student love animals and asking why things work the way they do? In this 12-week Marine Biology class, students will explore the ocean and the life within it through hands-on activities, guided lessons, and meaningful discussions. The goal is to help students build real understanding while keeping learning engaging and approachable.

Throughout the course, students will learn about ocean systems and a wide range of marine organisms while practicing important skills like observation, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Lessons are designed to be age-appropriate for both upper-elementary and middle-school students, with activities that reinforce each week’s topic.

Alaska’s marine life will be included as one part of the course, giving students a chance to connect what they are learning to the world around them. Students will study marine ecosystems from around the world while also learning about species they may recognize closer to home.

Topics include:

  • Ocean characteristics and ocean zones

  • Tides, intertidal zones, and marine life

  • Coral reefs and fish

  • Marine invertebrates

  • Marine reptiles and sharks

  • Marine mammals

Students will also see how marine biology connects to real life, whether that’s recognizing animals they might see while traveling, understanding how pollution affects ocean life, or learning why ecosystems depend on balance.

This class is a great fit for curious students who enjoy science, animals, and learning how the natural world works. It offers a solid foundation in marine biology while encouraging thoughtful questions and exploration.
